History of Olathe
Development in Olathe began with the opening of the Mahaffie House stagecoach stop in 1858. Located 3 miles (5 km) west of the Missouri River on the Santa Fe Trail, it became a prominent landmark in the area. The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm is now a living history museum and an Olathe icon.
With the start of the Civil War, activity on the Santa Fe Trail ceased. However, Olathe grew steadily as a farming community. By 1866, Olathe had become the secondlargest city in Johnson County with a population of 1,062.
Growth in Olathe was spurred by the arrival of the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1867. It was soon joined by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, making Olathe a hub of railroad activity. This led to an increase in Olathe’s population and the development of new businesses.
In 1869, the first schoolhouse was built in Olathe. This was followed by the establishment of Midland University in 1875, which later became Kansas City University.
Olathe experienced several floods during the late 1800s, with the most devastating occurring in 1877. Despite this, the city continued to grow, reaching a population of 5,585 in 1900.
The 20th century saw further growth in Olathe. The city’s population reached 11,525 by 1950. This growth was largely due to the expansion of the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Olathe continued to grow in the second half of the 20th century, reaching a population of 64,386 by 2000. This growth was fueled by the city’s proximity to Kansas City as well as its status as a bedroom community.
