History of New Philadelphia

In the late 1790s, a group of Quaker families seeking religious freedom and land to start new farms purchased 5,000 acres of land along the Muskingum River in presentday Ohio. They laid out a town and named it Newport, but the name was already being used by another community, so they changed it to New Philadelphia.

The town’s central square was reserved for public buildings, and streets were laid out in a grid pattern. Quakers believed in equality, so they did not have a hierarchy of rich and poor neighborhoods. Instead, they built simple frame houses for all residents, regardless of social status.

One of the town’s most notable residents was Abram Africanus Hobbs, a free black man who owned a successful tavern and stagecoach stop. When Ohio became a state in 1803, New Philadelphia was officially established as a township.

As more families moved to the area, the town began to grow and prosper. New Philadelphia was incorporated as a village in 1812 and became a city in 1867.

Today, New Philadelphia is a thriving community with a rich history. The city’s downtown area has been designated as a National Historic District, and many of the original Quaker houses are still standing. New Philadelphia is proud of its Quaker heritage and is home to a museum and research center dedicated to the history of the Quaker residents who founded the city.
