History of Muscatine
Muscatine is the county seat of Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 23,968 in the 2010 census, an increase from 22,697 in the 2000 census. The city is part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area, which includes the area along the Mississippi River between Moline, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa.
The history of Muscatine began with the Native Americans who occupied this area for thousands of years before European exploration. The first known group to occupy this area were the M Mésa, or “River People”, who were part of the Mississippian culture. They built a village called Swartout in the area which is now Muscatine.
The first Europeans to visit the area were the French, who came in 1673. They named the area Muscatine, which is French for “midland”. The French explorer, ReneRobert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, claimed the area for France. The French built a fort called Fort Belle Créneau, which was the first permanent European settlement in Iowa.
