History of Menominee
The city of Menominee, Michigan is located in the Upper Peninsula on the Menominee River. It is the county seat of Menominee County and has a population of 9,131 people as of the 2010 census.
The area that is now Menominee was originally inhabited by the Menominee Native American tribe. The name “Menominee” is derived from the French word for the tribe, “les Menominees”. The Menominee lived in the area for over 10,000 years before the first European settlers arrived in the early 1600s.
The first European to visit the area was French explorer Jean Nicolet who arrived in 1634. Nicolet is credited with being the first European to make contact with the Menominee tribe. He established good relations with the tribe and was even adopted into the tribe.
The Menominee continued to live in the area until the late 1800s when they were forced to relocate to a reservation in Wisconsin. In 1854, the federal government signed a treaty with the Menominee tribe which ceded their lands in Michigan to the United States. The tribe was relocated to a reservation in Keshena, Wisconsin in 1856.
