North Adams was first settled in 1745 during King George’s War, when Massachusetts built Fort Massachusetts to defend against French and Native American attacks. The town was officially incorporated in 1800, and was the county seat of Berkshire County from 1800 until 1885, when the county seat was moved to Pittsfield. North Adams is home to the largest contemporary art museum in the United States, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. MASS MoCA occupies a former factory building complex which was used by the Arnold Print Works, a leading nineteenth century producer of printed textiles and wallpaper.
The city is also home to the Drury High School, the Mohawk Trail Regional School District middle and elementary school, and the Edward Devotion School. Through the school district, North Adams students also attend Mount Greylock Regional School, a regional high school located in Williamstown.
