Fairhaven is a city in Whatcom County, Washington, United States. The city’s population was 8,547 at the 2010 census. Fairhaven was founded in 1883 on Bellingham Bay and named after Fairhaven, Massachusetts, by Charles Larrabee, an agent for the Northern Pacific Railway. It was the site of the Bellingham riots of 1907.
The town began as a planned community conceived by railroad magnate Charles Larrabee and Boston financier C.H. Clapp. In 1882, they purchased approximately 400acre of waterfront property on Bellingham Bay from the Hudson’s Bay Company and set about planning a town to be the terminus of the Great Northern Railway, which Larrabee was then constructing. The town was laid out in a grid pattern with streets running northsouth and eastwest, and was designed to be a model community with all amenities, including parks, schools, libraries, and churches. It was incorporated as a city in 1883.
Larrabee’s partner C.H. Clapp soon became disappointed with the progress of the town and sold his interest to Larrabee. Construction of the railroad was completed in 1890, but the town did not really begin to grow until after the Panic of 1893, when there was a great influx of people and money into the area. The town became a boomtown, with new construction and businesses springing up everywhere. Many of the buildings in the city’s downtown historic district date from this period.
In 1900, the city’s population was 4,032. By 1910, it had grown to 7,264. The city continued to grow rapidly through the 1920s, reaching a peak population of over 20,000 in 1930.
However, the Great Depression hit the city hard, and its population began to decline. Fairhaven was particularly hardhit because its economy was so reliant on the timber industry, which was in a slump. The city’s population dropped to 15,963 by 1940.
The city began to rebound in the 1950s, as the timber industry began to recover and new industries moved in. The city’s population grew to 17,677 by 1960. The city has continued to grow since then, although at a much slower pace. The 2010 census found that the city’s population had grown to 8,547.
