History of Melbourn
In the Domesday Book of 1086, the name Melburne is recorded as being in the Hundred of Westbury and your research can take you back even further to the Saxon period.
During the AngloSaxon settlement of Britain, the region now occupied by the City of Melbourne was part of the Kingdom of Mercia. The first recorded European settlement in the area was in 679 AD when a band of Saxons constructed a village on the River Don.
The name Melbourne is derived from the Old English middel which means “in the middle” and byrig meaning “town or settlement”.
By the late 10th century the Danes had control of the area and built a fortification which they called Danby. The village of Melbourne remained under Danish control until the Norman Conquest in 1066 when it was confiscated by William the Conqueror and given to one of his supporters, Geoffrey de Mandeville.
Geoffrey de Mandeville began construction of a castle at Melbourne which was completed in 1086. The Domesday Book records that Geoffrey de Mandeville held ten Knight’s Fees in Melbourne.
The de Mandeville family continued to hold the Lordship of the Manor of Melbourne until the early 14th century when it passed to the de la Pole family.
At the time of the de la Pole family’s ownership of the Manor, there were two villages in the parish of Melbourne; Great and Little Melburn.
In the 14th century, a manuscript known as the Melbourne Picture Rolls provides evidence of a flourishing community with a market, corn mill, watermill and 50 inhabited houses.
The Manor of Melbourne was sold by the de la Poles in 1628 and over the following centuries, the owners of the Manor changed several times.
In 1711, the then Lord of the Manor, Sir John Glynne, was created a baronet and the manor passed to the Glynne family.
The Glynnes were a wealthy and influential family and during their ownership of the manor, the village of Melbourne continued to grow. By the early 19th century, there were around 700 inhabitants in the village.
The Glynne family continued to own the manor until 1925 when it was sold to West Derbyshire District Council.
The City of Melbourne is now a thriving community with a population of over 3,000. Its history is evident in the many historic buildings which can be seen in the town centre including the Grade I listed St Michael and All Angels Church and the Grade II* listed Melbourne Hall.
