Berkhamsted is a historic market town in Hertfordshire, England. The town is situated in the Chiltern Hills, on the edge of the chalk escarpment of the Chilterns. Berkhamsted is in the west of the county, close to the border with Buckinghamshire. The town is 25 miles (40 km) northwest of London and 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Aylesbury.
The earliest record of the town’s name is in the 10th century, when it was recorded as Berchehamstede. The name means ‘open homestead or village’.
The town was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a royal borough. Berkhamsted Castle was built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. The castle was greatly enlarged by King Henry II in the 12th century. Berkhamsted Castle was captured by Parliamentarians in 1642 during the English Civil War. It was slighted (damaged beyond repair) by order of Parliament so that it could never again be used as a fortress.
The castle ruins are now a Grade I listed building, and are open to the public.
