Banstead is a town in Surrey, England. The town has a population of around 18,000 people and is located within the borough of Reigate and Banstead. The town is situated on the North Downs and is approximately 13 miles from the centre of London. The town is twinned with the town of SaintSauveurleVicomte in France.
The name of the town is thought to derive from the Old English words ‘bana’ meaning ‘beacon’ and ‘stede’ meaning ‘place’. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and was held by Earl Morcar.

Banstead is a town in Surrey, England. The town is located on the A217 road, close to the M25 motorway.
The earliest known settlement in Banstead was a small Roman farmstead, which was located near what is now the Banstead Downs. The farmstead was probably abandonned in the 5th century.
In the 11th century, Banstead was listed as a manor in the Domesday Book. The manor was owned by Walter Giffard, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The Manor of Banstead officially became a town in 1587 when Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to Walter Giffard’s grandson, Sir Richard Giffard.
Sir Richard Giffard was responsible for the construction of Banstead Place, a large manor house located in the town. The manor house was completed in 1593.
In the early 18th century, Banstead was a popular place for duels. The most famous duel took place in 1767 between Lord Camelford and Colonel Fitzpatrick. Lord Camelford was killed in the duel.
Banstead remained a small town until the early 20th century when the London commuter belt began to expand. The construction of the A217 road and the M25 motorway led to an increase in traffic through the town.
The population of Banstead has grown significantly since the 1950s and the town now has a population of over 16,000.
