History of Manchester

In 79 AD, the Romans founded Manchester as a fortress town on the site of a Celtic settlement called Mancunium. The name Manchester is derived from the Latin name for the Roman fort, which was known as Mamucium.

The city grew quickly as a market town and by the end of the 10th century, had a population of around 6,000. In the 11th century, Manchester was given its first charter by King William II and became a free borough.

During the Middle Ages, Manchester prospered as a centre of the woollen trade. The town was also renowned for its cloth fairs, which were held twice a year and attracted traders from all over England and Wales.

In the 16th century, Manchester began to manufacture linen and in the 17th century, the city became an important centre for the English cotton industry. The Industrial Revolution transformed Manchester into one of the world’s first industrial cities.

Since the 1890s, Manchester has been home to two of England’s most successful football clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City. The city has also been the birthplace of several musicians and bands including Oasis, The Stone Roses and Take That.
