History of Whitefield
Whitefield is a town and former civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester, England. Historically part of Lancashire, it lies 5.5 miles northnortheast of Bury, 4.8 miles eastsoutheast of Bolton and 12.4 miles northwest of the city of Manchester.
The town’s name is derived from the Old English hwīt, meaning “white”, and feld, meaning “open field”.
Whitefield was first recorded as a hamlet in 1212 and was part of the Bury fee. By 1266, it had become a town with a market, and it soon developed into a thriving market town.
In the 14th century, Whitefield was the scene of a major battle between the forces of Edward III and those of the Scottish king, Robert the Bruce. In 1642, the town was the site of a skirmish between the Royalist and Parliamentary troops during the English Civil War.
The town began to decline in the 19th century, due to the competition from the Manchester and Leeds Railway, which ran through the nearby town of Prestwich. By the end of the century, Whitefield had become a suburban village of Bury.
In the 20th century, the Cooperative Group bought up much of the land in Whitefield and built a large housing estate, known as Woodhill. The town also became home to several light industrial estates.
In recent years, Whitefield has undergone something of a revival, with new housing developments and a golf course. The town is now home to a number of tech companies, and its population has grown significantly.
