Windsor is a historic market town and unparished area in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire, England. It lies on the south bank of the River Thames facing Eton, Berkshires to the north, and links both counties to the M4 motorway. It is best known as the site of Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the British Royal Family.
The first record of Windsor is from the 11th century when William the Conqueror ordered that it be rebuilt to replace the existing Saxon settlement. The new Norman castle was built on a motte and bailey design and completed in 1070. The castle changed hands numerous times over the centuries but has been owned by the British monarchy since the 13th century.
Windsor became a thriving market town and notable coaching stop due to its proximity to London. The town’s market square was used for bull and bearbaiting before it was replaced by a new covered market in 1786. In 1848, Windsor was connected to the newly constructed Great Western Railway which brought increased trade and visitors to the town.
The town’s fortunes changed in the 20th century when it was chosen as the site of the Royal airstation, RAF Uxbridge. The expansion of the RAF brought great prosperity to Windsor during the Second World War but this was followed by a period of decline after the war ended.
