Machias is the primary city of the Machias, Maine Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Washington County and had a population of 4,719 at the 2010 census.

The town is best known as the site of the Battle of Machias, the first naval engagement of the American Revolution. The battle is commemorated by the Machias Liberty Bell, a replica of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, which was donated to the town in 1950 by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

History of Machias

The city of Machias is located in Washington County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,221 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washington County. The town’s name is pronounced “MAHshiass.”

The city is home to the University of Maine at Machias and the Machias Valley Airport.

The area was first settled in 1763 by Zachariah Plummer and his family. The town was incorporated on February 28, 1768. The name Machias comes from a native word meaning “bad little falls.”

The city was the site of the Battle of Machias, also known as the Egg Harbor Massacre, which was fought during the American Revolutionary War. On June 11, 1775, a group of local citizens, led by Colonel Benjamin Foster, captured and jailed British Lieutenant Dyer for igniting the rebellion in Machias. Dyer and his men were later released and the British burned the town in retaliation.

During the War of 1812, the British again attacked and burned the town.

In 1832, the St. Croix and Penobscot Indians ceded the area to the United States.

The town prospered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a lumbering and shipbuilding center. The Machiasport pulp and paper mill was built in 1883 and operated until it closed in 2006. The Machiasport Historical Society operates a museum in the former shipyard office of the L.W. Ackerson Company.

The city is located on the Machias River, which flows into the Gulf of Maine. The river has a hydroelectric dam that provides power to the city.
