History of Stockbridge
The first white settlers in the Stockbridge area were English missionaries who came to the Mahican village of Ockham in 1734. The Mahicans had occupied the area for centuries before the arrival of the English. The missionaries converted the Mahicans to Christianity and taught them how to farm. They also built a school and a church.
In 1739, the Massachusetts Bay Colony granted a charter to the town of Stockbridge. The town was named after Stockbridge in England. The first settlers were mostly farmers from New England. They cleared the land and built houses and farms.
In 1762, the first sawmill was built in Stockbridge. In 1764, the first gristmill was built. These mills helped the settlers to process their crops and lumber.
In the late 1700s, Stockbridge became known as a summer resort town. Wealthy people from Boston and New York came to Stockbridge to escape the heat and humidity of the city. They built large summer homes in the town.
