The city of Fall River was established in 1637 by Freetownbased Puritans who were dissatisfied with the land division of Plymouth Colony. The new town was named after the River Fall, which flows from the nearby Agawam River and forms the border between presentday Fall River, Massachusetts and Tiverton, Rhode Island.
In 1703, the town was officially incorporated as a city. The Fall River post office was established in 1828.
In 1855, the first cotton mill in Fall River began operating. The cotton industry subsequently became the city’s leading economic activity.
