History of Lewiston (Maine)

Lewiston, Maine is located in Androscoggin County in the state of Maine, in the United States of America. It is the second largest city in the state, with a population of 36,592 people as of 2019. The city has a total area of 40 square miles (104 km2), and is the county seat of Androscoggin County.

The city’s history began in the early 1600s when the area was inhabited by the Native American tribe known as the Androscoggins. The tribe had a settlement on the banks of the Androscoggin River, which they called “Cannicowit.” The name “Lewiston” is derived from one of the tribe’s sachem (chief), Passaconaway, who had his winter home here. In 1669, the first Europeans, a group of English explorers, arrived in the area. They established a trading post called “Bates Fort” on the Androscoggin River.

The first permanent European settlers arrived in the early 1700s, and by 1740 there were around 100 families living in the area. The settlement was incorporated as a town in 1795, and renamed “Lewistown” after its chief, Passaconaway. The town became part of Baptisme et d’Acadie, a large tract of land in Maine that was granted to the Acadian people by the British government. In 1809, the town was renamed “Lewiston” after one of its leading citizens, Colonel Isaac Newton Lewis.

During the American Civil War, Lewiston was a hotbed of antiUnion sentiment, and was home to a number of Confederate sympathizers. In 1863, a group of men from Lewiston attempted toBurn down the city’s armory, which was being used by Union soldiers. The plot was foiled and the men were arrested, but the incident showed the depth of feeling against the Union in the city.

In the late 1800s, Lewiston became known as the “Shoe Capital of the World,” due to the large number of shoe factories in the city. The city’s population exploded during this time, growing from around 5,000 people in 1880 to over 30,000 by 1920. The prosperity of the shoe industry led to the construction of many fine buildings in the city, including several memorable office towers downtown.

The shoe industry began to decline in the mid20th century, however, and by the 1970s most of the factories had closed. The city’s economy shifted to healthcare and education, with two hospitals and a university located here. In the 21st century, Lewiston has continued to reinvent itself, with a growing arts and cultural scene. The city is also home to a growing number of refugees and immigrants, who have helped to revitalize the downtown area.

Lewiston has a long and rich history, dating back to the 1600s. It is a city that has seen many changes over the centuries, but has always managed to adapt and thrive. Today, Lewiston is a vibrant and diverse city, with much to offer its residents and visitors alike.
