History of La Crosse

The city of La Crosse, Wisconsin was founded in 1841 by Dr. Nathan Strong, a New York doctor who had relocated to the area. The city was named after the French word for “cross”, in reference to the location at the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers. The city grew quickly, and by 1856 it had a population of over 3,000. It became a hub for the lumber and brewing industries, and by the early 1900s it was the largest city in Wisconsin.

The city experienced a period of decline in the mid1900s, as the lumber and brewing industries declined. However, it has since rebounded and is now a thriving city with a population of over 50,000. It is home to several universities, including the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, and is a popular tourist destination.

The city of La Crosse is rich in history and culture, and is well worth a visit.
