History of Chico

The City of Chico was founded in 1860 by John Bidwell, a prominent pioneer, statesman, and agriculturist. Nestled in the Northern Sacramento Valley, Chico was originally named after the creekside rancho that General John Bidwell purchased in 1849. The City officially incorporated on January 8, 1865 and has since become the cultural, economic, and educational center of Butte County.

Chico is perhaps best known as the home of California State University, Chico, which was founded in 1887, making it the second oldest campus in the CSU system. The University has an enrollment of over 17,000 students and is a vital part of the Chico community. The City is also home to a thriving downtown district with a variety of shops, restaurants, and businesses, as well as several historical landmarks.
