History of Keene
Keene is a city in southwestern New Hampshire, United States. The population was 23,409 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Cheshire County. Keene is home to Keene State College and Antioch University New England. The community was originally named “Upper Ashuelot” before being renamed in 1732 after Colonel Timothy Keene, who oversaw the construction of Fort Keene (1704) during the French and Indian War.
