History of Kankakee

The city of Kankakee is located in northern Illinois, on the banks of the Kankakee River. The area was first settled in the early 1830s by a group of FrenchCanadian farmers. The settlers named the area “Kankakee” after the MiamiIllinois word meaning “open country” or “land of the deer.”

The city was officially founded in 1854, and was soon designated as the county seat of Kankakee County. The city continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, becoming a major manufacturing center during the early 1900s.

Today, Kankakee is home to around 27,000 people. The city’s economy is diversified, with manufacturing, healthcare, and education being the main sectors.
