Sights in Hemsworth
Hemsworth is a historic town located in South Yorkshire, England. The town is home to a number of significant sights, including the ruins of a 12thcentury castle, a grade I listed church and a number of Georgianstyle buildings.
The Hemsworth Castle ruins are situated on a hilltop overlooking the town. The castle was built in the 12th century by the de Warenne family and was later occupied by the earls of Chester. The castle was partially destroyed during the English Civil War and today only the foundations and walls remain.
The grade I listed church of St. Michael and All Angels dates back to the 13th century and is one of the most important historic buildings in the town. History of Hemsworth
The small town of Hemsworth in West Yorkshire, England has a long and varied history. The first recorded mention of the town is in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it is listed as “Hameswere”. At this time the town was a small settlement with a population of around 200. The name “Hemsworth” is thought to be derived from the Old English “ham” meaning “village” or “settlement” and “wer” meaning “weir” or “dam”.
The town grew slowly throughout the medieval period and by the 16th century had a population of around 1,000. The town was prosperous at this time due to its position on the River Aire which was used for trade. The town also had two annual fairs which were popular with traders.
The town’s fortunes changed in the 17th century when the River Aire changed course and Hemsworth was no longer on the main trading route. The town declined rapidly and by the early 19th century, its population had fallen to just 400.
The town began to recover in the late 19th century when coal mining began in the area. The population of the town grew rapidly, reaching 8,000 by 1914. The coal mines brought wealth to the town but they also brought danger and tragedy. In 1923, an explosion at the nearby Fitzwilliam Pit killed 26 miners.
The coal mines continued to operate until the 1980s when they finally closed. This led to another decline in the town’s fortunes but in recent years Hemsworth has begun to regeneration. The town is now home to a number of small businesses and has a population of around 9,000.
