History of Milton

Milton is a town and civil parish in the administrative district of Aylesbury Vale, in Buckinghamshire, England. It is situated on the River Great Ouse, about 7 miles (11 km) east of the county town of Aylesbury. The town has a population of about 5,000.

Milton was first settled in the Saxon period. The name comes from the Old English for “middle farm”. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Milton was part of the large Manor of Halton.

The Manor of Halton was owned by the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. The Manor then passed through a number of hands until it was bought by Sir Edward Coke in 1606. The Manor remained in the hands of the Coke family until the 19th century.

The main industry in Milton in the past was brickmaking. The clay for the bricks was obtained from the river bed. The bricks were used for building houses in the surrounding villages. In the 20th century, Milton became a commuter village for London.

Milton Keynes, a new town, was built just to the north of Milton in 1967. Milton was incorporated into Milton Keynes in 1974.

Milton today is a thriving community with a wide range of amenities. There are several schools, a library, a health centre, shops and a variety of clubs and societies. The Milton Keynes Museum is located in the town centre.
