History of Peterborough
Peterborough is a historic city located in the East of England, in the county of Cambridgeshire. The city is built on the confluence of the River Nene and the River Welland, approximately 75 miles (121 km) north of London. The first settlement in the area was founded by the Celts in around the 1st century BC, and the name “Peterborough” is derived from the Old English name “Sceaftesburh”, meaning “fortified town”.
The city grew rapidly during the AngloSaxon period, and was quickly established as a key strategic location due to its position on the river crossing. The first recorded use of the name “Peterborough” dates back to 972 AD, when it was referred to as “Burgh Castle”.
The Normans conquered the area in 1066, and Peterborough Castle was built by the Conqueror’s halfbrother Odo of Bayeux. The castle became an important royal residence, and was frequently used as a base by both William the Conqueror and his son, William Rufus.
The town grew significantly in the 12th century, with the development of the Abbey of St Peter, which became one of the largest in England. The town was given its first charter in 1189, and became a county corporate in 1469.
During the medieval period, Peterborough was an important centre for trade and industry, particularly for the woollen trade. The town was also host to a number of religious institutions, including a Benedictine Abbey, numerous monasteries, hospitals and colleges.

After the Civil War, the town slowly began to rebuild, and by the end of the 17th century it had regained its prewar prosperity. The 18th century saw further growth, with the arrival of the railways in the 19th century transforming Peterborough into a major industrial town.
