Hastings is a city in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 22,172 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dakota County.

The city was named for early settler and lumberman Moses Hastings. He established a sawmill there in 1854, six years after the first FrenchCanadian settlers arrived in the area. They were followed by Irish, German, Swedish and Norwegian immigrants. Many of the new arrivals worked in the lumber industry.

Hastings’ growth was spurred by the arrival of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway in 1870. The town was incorporated in 1873.

The city’s first newspaper, the Hastings Gazette, was founded in 1874.

In 1883, fire destroyed much of the business district. The city was rebuilt and continued to grow.

Theodore Roosevelt frequently visited Hastings while he was living in the nearby town of St. James. He stayed at the LeDuc Mansion, which is now a museum.

Roosevelt once said, “I have always believed that if I had lived in ancient times, I would have been a Spartan.” That sentiment was echoed by one of Hastings’ nicknames, “The City of Spartans.”

Industry has always been important to Hastings. Early on, the city was known for its mills and breweries. The Minneapolis Moline Company was founded here in 1912.

Hastings is also the birthplace of the Honeycrisp apple. This variety was developed by the University of Minnesota and introduced in 1991.
