History of Tonawanda
The City of Tonawanda is situated at the northern end of Erie County, New York State, United States. It is one of the “Buffalo Niagara Falls” metropolitan area’s North Towns and is located on the Niagara River 14 miles (21 kilometers) north of Buffalo. The City of Tonawanda is immediately across the river from the Town of Grand Island. The town was first settled by Europeans around 1805 and incorporated in 1836.
The town of Tonawanda was originally part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation, a 1764 cession of land by the Senecas to the colony of New York. The first settlers weremostly veterans of the Revolutionary War recruited by Holland Land Company agents. Many settlers did not stay, as the land was found unsuitable for agriculture, and moved to Cleveland or Cincinnati. In 1808, the town was organized. The name is variously attributed to a Seneca chief named Tane, an Iroquois Chief named Tonawanda, meaning “Swift Running Water”, or to a French settler or trapper named Tona who was nicknamed by the Indians.
The War of 1812 resulted in damage to the town and burning of the original US Capitol building in Washington, D.C. (The second and present US Capitol building would not be constructed until after the Civil War). A British landing party destroyed grist and lumber mills in the town, which were rebuilt after the war.
The original town of Tonawanda was split off from the town of Buffalo in 1836, forming the basis for the present city. The Erie Canal was opened in 1825, and ran through the center of the city (it has since been rerouted south of the city). Railroad construction in the 19th century increased the shipping options available to Tonawanda businesses and residents, and the city developed a diverse economy based on grain milling, lumber, fishing, and other industries.
The 20th century was not kind to the city of Tonawanda. Several major fires destroyed portions of the city, including a large section of the downtown area in 1901. A devastating tornado struck the city on July 21, 1909, leveling dozens of buildings and causing nearly $1 million in damage (nearly $27 million in 2020 dollars). The tornado was part of a larger outbreak that produced 47 tornadoes across the Midwest and Northeast United States, killing at least550 people.
The opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1957 allowed oceangoing vessels to bypass the city, and the opening of the Erie Canal to barge traffic in 1977 dealt a further blow to the city’s economy. The loss of jobs and population led to a decline in the city’s tax base, and by the 1990s the city was in severe financial distress.
The city has made a comeback in recent years, thanks in large part to the efforts of local residents and businesses. The downtown area has been revitalized, and the city has become a popular destination for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts.
