History of Hanover (Virginia)
Hanover, Virginia was established in 1720 and is located in Hanover County. It was named for the House of Hanover in Germany. The town served as the county seat of Hanover County from 1720 until 1842 when the courthouse was moved to the town of Richmond. Hanover was home to several mills and factories during the early 19th century. The Hanover Tannery was one of the largest tanneries in the country and operated from 1802 until 1922.
