Oneida is a city located in Madison County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 11,390. The city is named after the Oneida people, who occupied the area prior to European settlement.
Oneida is located on the Oneida River, 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Syracuse.
Oneida has a number of historical and architectural sites. The City Hall, built in 1889, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Madison County Courthouse, also on the NRHP, was built in 1816. The Smith Opera House, built in 1869, is also NRHPlisted.
Oneida is home to the Oneida Community Mansion House, a National Historic Landmark and the largest surviving commune house in the United States. The Mansion House was built by the Oneida Community, a religious commune founded by John Humphrey Noyes in 1848. The Community occupied the Mansion House and other properties in Oneida until its dissolution in 1881. The first known occupants of the area now known as Oneida were the Onondaga, one of the original five nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Onondaga occupied the area around Oneida Lake from the 12th century until 1654, when they moved south to what is now Onondaga County.
In 1784, the Oneida Tribe was formalized as a nation under the Articles of Confederation, and in 1788, it became one of the original signatories of the United States Constitution. In 1789, the tribe ceded its land to the state of New York, and in 1848, the Oneidas purchased a tract of land in northcentral New York. This was the start of the presentday Oneida Nation.
The Village of Oneida was incorporated in 1848. In 1855, it was rechartered as a City, and in 1902, it merged with the Village of Kenwood to form the presentday City of Oneida.
