History of Kitty Hawk
Kitty Hawk, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is where the Wright brothers made their first powered flight on December 17, 1903. The town was named after the Kitty Hawk lifesaving station located nearby.
The Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, were two bicycle shop owners from Dayton, Ohio. They became interested in flight after reading about it in a magazine. The Wrights taught themselves the physics of flight and built their own airplane. They named their airplane the Flyer.
On December 14, 1903, the Wrights took the Flyer to Kitty Hawk for their first attempt at powered flight. The first day, they made numerous short flights, but on the fourth day, they achieved their goal. Wilbur made a flight of 852 feet in 59 seconds. Orville’s longest flight of the day was 852 feet in 51 seconds.
The Wright brothers continued to refine their invention, and on May 23, 1904, they made the first controlled, sustained flight of a heavierthanair machine in history. From Kitty Hawk, the Wright brothers went on to open the world’s first flight school in Dayton, Ohio.
