Hanalei is a town located on the north shore of Kaua’i in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The town is divided into two parts by the Hanalei River: Haena to the west of the river and Wainiha to the east. The latter is inaccessible by road, and can only be reached by boat or by hiking a trail through the jungle.
The community of Hanalei includes several small businesses and a elementary school. Hanalei Bay is a large crescentshaped beach that is popular for surfing, swimming, kayaking, and windsurfing. There is also a reef offshore from the bay which is good for snorkeling and diving.

History of Hanalei
Hanalei is a censusdesignated place (CDP) in Kauaʻi County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 450 at the 2010 census. Hanalei means “crescent bay” in Hawaiian.
Hanalei Bay is approximately 3 miles (5 km) long and half a mile (800 m) wide. It is encircled by the town of Princeville at its northern end and by the Haʻena State Park at its southern end. Coconut Palms, Niʻihau, and the Makana Mountains (also known as Bali Hai from the film South Pacific) dominate the view looking south from the Hanalei Pier.
Hanalei was settled in the early 19th century by Chinese immigrants who planted rice in the rich soil of the valley. In 1860, George Nawahiokalaniopuu, the grandson of Kamehameha I, was living in Hanalei and running a successful ranch. At that time, Hanalei was the largest village on the North Shore of Kauai. In 1864, Nawahiokalaniopuu was arrested and imprisoned for treason against the Kingdom of Hawaii; he was tried and acquitted in 1865. After his release, he became Kauai’s first representative to the Kingdom’s legislature, the House of Nobles.
In the 1870s, sugarcane plantations began to proliferate in Hanalei and the surrounding areas. Many of the plantation workers were immigrants from China and the Philippines. Plantation owners built homes for their workers in Hanalei, and a Chinatown soon developed. The plantation era ended in 1947, when the last sugar mill in Hanalei closed.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Hanalei became a popular surf spot for both local Hawaiian surfers and visiting mainlanders. Surfing pioneers such as Wally Froiseth, Dick Metz, Rabbit Kekai, and Butch Van Artsdalen helped to popularize the sport in Hanalei.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the town of Hanalei was threatened by two proposed developments that would have forever changed the character of the town. The first was a plan to build an airport in Hanalei Bay; the second was a proposal to build a resort hotel on Black Pot Beach. Thanks to the efforts of many concerned citizens, both of these plans were thwarted and Hanalei remains much as it has been for generations.
Today, Hanalei is a quaint small town with a population of about 450 people. Tourism is the primary industry, and the town is popular with visitors from all over the world. Hanalei’s beauty, its laidback atmosphere, and itsfriendly people continue to make it one of the most special places on earth.
