Founded in 1752 by SwissGerman immigrant named Conrad Griess, Gastonia was originally settled along the branches of the South Fork of the Catawba River. The name “Gastonia” is derived from the Greek word gaston, meaning “wealthy.”

What is now Gastonia was first settled by ScotsIrish farmers in the late 1750s. These early settlers were soon joined by other ScotsIrish families as well as German, English, and Welsh families. The town of Gastonia was officially founded in 1847.

The 1850s and 1860s were a period of tremendous growth for Gastonia. The population of the town increased from about 500 in 1850 to over 2,000 by 1865. During this time, Gastonia became an important center for cotton milling and manufacturing. In 1864, the first cotton mill in Gastonia was built. By the 1870s, there were over a dozen mills in operation in the town.
