The city grew rapidly in its early years, thanks in part to the construction of the Cedar Rapids and Missouri Railroad in 1859. The railroad made Cedar Rapids a key shipping point for products from the surrounding agricultural areas. The city was also home to a number of manufacturing businesses, including a large number of mills and grain elevators.

The city was hit hard by the Great Depression, but it bounced back in the 1940s thanks to the production of war materials during World War II. After the war, the city continued to grow, and today it is a thriving metropolis with a strong economy and a vibrant cultural scene.
