Ferryhill is a town situated in County Durham, in the North East of England. The town has a population of just over 5,000 people and is located approximately 10 miles to the south west of Durham City.
The town is an ancient one, with records of its existence going back to 973 AD, when it was mentioned in the will of Elfred, Bishop of Winchester. In the centuries since then, it has been a market town and a centre for weaving and coal mining. More recently, it has become a commuter town for those working in Durham City and further afield.

History of Ferryhill
Ferryhill is a town in County Durham, England. The town is located on the River Skerne, a tributary of the River Tees. The first recorded mention of Ferryhill is in the will of Aldhun, Bishop of Durham, who died in 1018. In the will, he refers to a “ferry over the Skerne at Ferehella”.
The name Ferryhill is thought to derive from Old English and mean “woodland clearing near a river crossing”. The town was originally a hamlet in the parish of Spennymoor. It became a separate civil parish in 1866.
The first bridge over the Skerne was built in 1730. The current bridge, which was built in 1956, carries the A167 road.
Ferryhill station was opened in 1856 and is served by the Durham to Sunderland Line.
The town has a long history of coal mining. The first colliery was established in 1752. By the early 20th century, there were 10 collieries in the vicinity of Ferryhill. The last pit, Westwood Colliery, closed in 1991.
