History of Canvey Island
Canvey Island is a town in England, on the River Thames. Canvey Island was an island until the canals and river were reclaimed for farmland in the 18th century. The island is in the county of Essex, about 30 miles (50 km) east of London. Its population is about 38,000.
The first human settlement on Canvey Island is believed to have been in the 6th century, when it was used as a landing place for Saxon invaders. Canvey Island was then a part of the Hundred of Pitsea, which was a division of land in Essex.
In the 12th century, Canvey Island was known as Cantei.” The name “Canvey” probably comes from the Old English meaning “Island of reeds”.
In the 13th century, Canvey Island became part of the Duchy of Lancaster. It was then given to the de Veres, Earls of Oxford. The de Veres held the island until 1572.
In 1588, Canvey Island was fortified against the Spanish Armada. Fortifications were built across the islands, including a moat, earthworks, and a gun emplacement.
In 1622, the island was sold by the de Veres to Sir Henry Appleton. The Appleton family held the island until 1795.
Canvey Island was hit by a great storm in November 1703. The storm surge caused the Thames to breached the island’s sea walls. Floodwaters covered the island, killing many people and animals. The island was evacuated, and remained uninhabited for more than 100 years.
In 1808, a new sea wall was built, and people slowly began to move back to the island. Canvey Island was hit by another severe storm in 1953. The North Sea surge destroyed much of the island, and killed 58 people.
