History of Fergus Falls

Fergus Falls is a city in Minnesota. The population was 13,138 at the 2010 census. Fergus Falls is the county seat of Otter Tail County.

In 1853, George A. Brackett, a land surveyor for the Northern Pacific Railway, came to Otter Tail County to establish the site for a station on the railway. Brackett was also a pioneer in the lumber industry and he established a sawmill near the presentday city of Fergus Falls. Brackett named the new settlement “Fergus” in honor of James Fergus, one of the first European settlers in the area.

The city of Fergus Falls was officially incorporated in 1872. The early years of the city were marked by a variety of economic enterprises including lumbering, farming, and manufacturing. The city’s fortunes changed in the early 20th century when it became a regional center for healthcare and education. The city is home to two hospitals and a state university.
