History of Compton
Compton is a city in southern Los Angeles County, California, United States, situated south of downtown Los Angeles. Compton is one of the oldest cities in the county and on May 11, 1888, was the eighth city to incorporate. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 96,456. It is known as the “Hub City” due to its geographic centrality in Los Angeles County. Neighborhoods in Compton include Sunny Cove, Leland, Downtown Compton, and Richland Farms.
Compton was originally settled by the Tongva Native Americans as a village known as Galeaña. The first European settlers in the area were a group of Spanish soldiers in 1784 led by Captain Pedro Fages, who claimed the land for Spain. In 1867, Native Americans sold the land to a group of Mormon pioneers from Utah. In 1887, the city of Compton was founded by Griffith Dickenson Compton, a prominent dry land farmer who owned property in the area. The city was incorporated on May 11, 1888 with a population of 500 people.
Compton’s early years were marked by violence and crime. In 1915, the Ku Klux Klan established a chapter in Compton. In the 1920s, Compton became a haven for Prohibitionera bootleggers and gangsters. Judge Benjamin H. Coopersmith was assassinated in his Chambers in the New Court House on April 17, 1924. On May 15, 1928, Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association’s longshoremen’s section tried to stop the unloading of Italian bananas at the city docks, leading to the Compton Massacre. Seven men and four women were killed, and 32 people were wounded, mostly African American longshoremen. The street where this took place is now called Bananas Court.
In the 1930s and 1940s, Native Americans, Mexicans, and African Americans moved into the area as farmers left due to the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. James P. McGranery, the U.S. Attorney General under President Harry Truman, was born in Compton. In the 1950s, the city became a fairly middleclass suburb of Los Angeles as it grew in population. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, Compton was the site of increasing racial tensions and violence, culminating in the Watts Riots of 1965 and the killings of six Compton police officers in 1971. The city became infamous for gang activity and drug use, and was nicknamed “the richest city in Crack”.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Compton saw a series of riots and protests against police brutality, culminating in the Rodney King Riots of 1992. In the years since, the city has made efforts to redevelop itself. Today, Compton is a largely residential city with a growing economy.
