History of Longview (Texas)
The founding of Longview, Texas is dated to the arrival of Hasinai Indians from East Texas in the area. TheHasinai built a number of small villages in the area, which were inhabited by as many as 800 people at the time of the first European contact. The area was part of Spain’s Los Adaes Province, which was established in 1729. French explorers visited the area in 1739 and named it “Longue Riviere,” or “Longview” in English.
In 1836, Texas gained independence from Mexico and established itself as a republic. The following year, Longview was established as one of the first American settlements in East Texas. The town was named after John Long, who had settled there in 1837.
Longview grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, due in part to the construction of the Sabine River and Industrial Canal. The city became a major center for the lumber industry, with several large sawmills operating within its boundaries. The city also became a hub for the railroad industry, with the Gulf, Sabine & Northern Railway choosing Longview as its headquarters.
