History of Longview (Texas)
The founding of Longview, Texas is dated to the arrival of Hasinai Indians from East Texas in the area. TheHasinai built a number of small villages in the area, which were inhabited by as many as 800 people at the time of the first European contact. The area was part of Spain’s Los Adaes Province, which was established in 1729. French explorers visited the area in 1739 and named it “Longue Riviere,” or “Longview” in English.
In 1836, Texas gained independence from Mexico and established itself as a republic. The following year, Longview was established as one of the first American settlements in East Texas. The town was named after John Long, who had settled there in 1837.
Longview grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, due in part to the construction of the Sabine River and Industrial Canal. The city became a major center for the lumber industry, with several large sawmills operating within its boundaries. The city also became a hub for the railroad industry, with the Gulf, Sabine & Northern Railway choosing Longview as its headquarters.
The oil boom of the early 20th century brought even more prosperity to Longview. Several large oil fields were discovered in the vicinity, and the city became home to a number of processing and refining plants. The population of Longview exploded, growing from 3,000 in 1900 to over 30,000 by 1930.
During World War II, Longview’s industries transitioned to support the war effort. The city’s sawmills produced lumber for military barracks and other structures, while the oil refineries produced fuel for the American war machine. After the war, Longview returned to its status as a major center for the lumber and oil industries.
In recent years, Longview has seen a decline in its traditional industries. The city’s sawmills and oil refineries have shuttered, leaving behind an economic void. Longview has attempted to diversify its economy in recent years, but has yet to find a solution to its industrial decline.
