History of Arcadia

Arcadia is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The city is located about 13 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles in what is known as the San Gabriel Valley. Arcadia is known as a bedroom community with a relatively small population. The city is home to the Santa Anita Park racetrack and the Westfield Santa Anita shopping mall.

The area now known as Arcadia was originally inhabited by the Tongva people, who lived in the area for over 8,000 years. The Tongva were a peaceful people and were known for their agriculture. The first European settlers to arrive in the area were Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, which was founded in 1771. The Mission was built to convert the Tongva people to Christianity.

In 1839, the Mexican government granted land Anaheim Spanish Rancho to Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker. Baker was a wealthy Californio ranchero and philanthropist. She used the land to build an adobe ranch house, which still stands today and is known as the “Baker House”.

After the MexicanAmerican War, California was annexed by the United States and became a state in 1850. In 1860, Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker married Jonathan Scott, an Englishman. Scott renamed the property “Rancho Santa Anita”, after a nearby canyon.

In 1903, the owners of Rancho Santa Anita subdivided the land and sold it off in parcels. The area where the subdivision was built was called Arcadia. The first Arcadia subdivision was recorded in 1904.

In 1906, the Santa Fe Railway built a railway line through Arcadia, which led to further development of the area.

In 1907, the Arcadia Town Company was formed to promote Arcadia as a resort community. The company built a number of amenities including a golf course, tennis courts, and a clubhouse.

By 1910, Arcadia had a population of 500 and was incorporated as a city.

During the 1920s, Arcadia was a popular destination for Hollywood celebrities who wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. Celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, and Buster Keaton all owned homes in Arcadia.

The Great Depression and World War II brought a halt to the city’s growth. However, after the war, Arcadia experienced a population boom as families moved to the suburbs.
