History of Elmira
Elmira is a city located in Chemung County, New York. It is situated in the Southern Tier of New York state, approximately midway between the cities of Binghamton and Rochester. The population of Elmira was 27,012 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth largest city in the state of New York.
Elmira was first settled in 1788. The first permanent structure built in the town was a log cabin built by Colonel Philip S. Post. The Town of Elmira was incorporated in 1828. In 1848, the Elmira and Seneca Falls Railroad was completed, making Elmira the first city in Chemung County to have a railroad.
The economy of Elmira was heavily dependent on the manufacturing of locomotives and other railroad equipment during the 19th century. The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) was the largest employer in the city, with the Erie Railroad being the second largest. The onset of the First World War increased the demand for locomotives and other war materials, and Elmira’s factories were working overtime to meet the demand.
Elmira was also the site of one of the largest POW camps in the United States during the Second World War. The camp, officially known as Camp Elmira, housed Axis prisoners of war, many of whom were German. The camp operated from 1942 to 1946, and at its peak, housed over 12,000 prisoners.
