History of Elizabeth City

Elizabeth City is a small city located in northeastern North Carolina. The city is situated on the Pasquotank River, which bisects the town. Elizabeth City is the county seat of Pasquotank County and has a population of just over 18,000 people.

The city was founded in 1793 and named for Elizabeth Elkins, the wife of one of the founders. Elizabeth City became the county seat in 1799. The city flourished in the early 1800s as a regional center for trade and commerce.Elizabeth City was also the site of the state’s first newspaper, The Virginia Gazette, which was established in 1799.

In the mid19th century, Elizabeth City was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved Africans to escape to freedom in the North. Several historic homes in Elizabeth City were used as Underground Railroad stops.

The Civil War was a devastating event for Elizabeth City. The town was occupied by Union troops in 1862 and many of the city’s buildings were burned. After the war, Elizabeth City slowly began to rebuild.

The city’s economy grew in the early 20th century with the establishment of Coast Guard base and a large naval air station. Elizabeth City was also home to the first female AfricanAmerican commercial pilot, Bessie Coleman.
