History of Littleton

Littleton, Colorado, is a Home Rule Municipality in Arapahoe, Douglas, and Jefferson counties in the U.S. state of Colorado and is a suburb of Denver. The city is a part of the DenverAuroraLakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 41,737 at the 2010 United States Census.

The town of Littleton was founded in 1890 by Richard Sullivan Little and his wife, Bertha Katherine Little. While it started as a small farming community, the town’s growth exploded following the construction of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad’s main line through the town in 1873. The railroad eventually brought not only jobs and economic growth, but also tourism and new settlers to the area.

In the early 1900s, the town began to grow more rapidly, fueled by an influx of German, Irish, and Italian immigrants. By the 1950s, Littleton’s population had reached almost 10,000 people, and the town had transformed from a rural farming community to a thriving suburb of Denver.

In the late 20th century, Littleton became known for two tragic events: the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999 and at Arapahoe High School in 2013. Both tragedies deeply affected the community, but Littleton has remained a strong and resilient city.

Today, Littleton is a thriving suburban community with a historic downtown, a thriving arts scene, and a growing economy. The city is also home to a number of major corporations, including United Launch Alliance, Ball Aerospace, and Raytheon. Littleton is truly a city with a rich history and a bright future.
