History of Duluth
Duluth is a port city in the state of Minnesota in the United States. Duluth has a long and complex history, dating back to the time when it was inhabited by the Dakhota people. The Dakhota were a Native American tribe who lived in what is now known as the Minnesota Arrowhead region. The name “Duluth” is derived from the French word for “the head”, referring to the location of the city at the west end of Lake Superior.
Duluth was first explored by Europeans in the early 1600s, with French explorer Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, being the first to map the area in 1679. The British soon followed, with Fort William established in 1802. In 1805, Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe selected the site as the terminal for the proposed Great Western Road, which would connect Upper Canada to the navigable lakes.
The American takeover of the area began in 1815, following the War of 1812. The reason for this was twofold; to establish a military presence in the area to help protect against the British, and to begin to assert American territorial claims in the region. The United States Army established Fort Snelling at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers in 1819, which served as a base of operations for the American expansion into the Northwest.
In 1822, the American Fur Company established a post at Fond du Lac (present day Duluth), which quickly became the primary trading post in the region. The fur trade would remain an important part of the city’s economy for many years to come.
As the American frontier continued to push westward, Duluth became an important staging point for settlers headed to the Minnesota Territory. It also became a key supply point for miners heading to the newly discovered gold fields of northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The city of Duluth was officially incorporated in 1857, with a population of just over 2,000. The following year, the Duluth and Mississippi Railroad was completed, connecting Duluth to the outside world. This event would prove to be pivotal in the city’s development.
The 1860s saw a boom in Duluth’s population and economy, due in large part to the Civil War. The city became an important Union outpost, serving as a base for troops and supplies heading to the front lines.
