History of Fitchburg
Fitchburg is a city in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 40,318 at the 2010 census. Fitchburg is home to the Fitchburg State University as well as 17 public elementary and secondary schools.
Founded in 1730 by settlers from Lunenburg, Massachusetts, Fitchburg was the fifth town in Worcester County to be incorporated. The town was originally named after John Fitch, one of the proprietors of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Fitchburg evolved into a primarily industrial city during the 19th century, with large shoe and textile factories such as the Prentiss Mills and Nichols & Stone Company. The city’s economy began to decline in the late 20th century, as the factories closed and businesses moved to other parts of the country.
Fitchburg has attempted to revitalize its downtown area in recent years, with mixed results. The city has also begun to attract new residents, as its proximity to Boston and Worcester makes it an attractive commuter location.
Fitchburg was first settled in 1730 by a group of settlers from Lunenburg, Massachusetts led by Capt. Timothy Nash.
