Clinton, Oklahoma is a city located in Custer County, Oklahoma. The population was 7,044 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Custer County.
Clinton was founded in 1891 as a railroad town, and was named for Grover Cleveland, the thencurrent President of the United States. It was originally located in northwestern Indian Territory, but was moved to its present location in 1900 when it was designated as the county seat of newlycreated Custer County.
In the early 1900s, Clinton was an active livestock market and shipping center; in addition to numerous hotels and rooming houses, the town boasted three stockyards and several packing plants. The construction of the ClintonMorehead pipeline in 1926 further fueled the town’s growth, and by the 1930s Clinton had become an important regional center for the oil and gas industry.
The town continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and today is home to a diverse array of businesses and industries. Clinton’s historic downtown district is home to a variety of shops and restaurants, and the city is also home to a number of parks and recreation facilities.
