Sights in Chudleigh
Chudleigh is a market town in Devon, England. It lies on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park, about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Exeter and 30 miles (48 km) east of Plymouth.The town is twinned with CherbourgOcteville in France.
The town grew up around a castle built in the 12th century, which was later owned by the Courtenay family. The castle was besieged by Parliamentary troops during the Civil War and was slighted in 1646. The town later became known for its lacemaking and papermaking industries.
Today, Chudleigh is a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to enjoy the views of the countryside and the castle ruins. The town is home to a number of traditional pubs and restaurants, as well as a number of shops selling locally produced food and crafts.

History of Chudleigh
Chudleigh is a town in Devon, England, on the edge of Dartmoor. It had a population of 5,078 at the 2011 census.
The name comes from the Old English for ‘ cattle pasture’.
The town was first mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Chedelie.
It grew up around the market and meetings of the hundred court, which were held in the buttercross in the centre of the town.
In 1253, King Henry III granted Chudleigh a charter to hold a weekly market and an annual fair.
The parish church of St Michael the Archangel dates from the 13th century.
During the English Civil War, Chudleigh was a Royalist stronghold. Prince Maurice stayed in the town during his campaign to relieve the Siege of Exeter in 1643.
The town remained a market town and coaching stop until the coming of the railways in the 19th century.
The South Devon Railway reached Chudleigh in 1865 and the town became a junction with the Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway, which opened in 1866.
The railways brought tourists to the town and it became a popular destination for daytrippers from Plymouth and other nearby towns.
The town’s railway station was closed in 1968 as part of the Beeching cuts.
Nowadays, Chudleigh is a popular town for commuters, as it is only 10 miles from Exeter and has good road links to Plymouth and Cornwall.
The town has two primary schools, a secondary school, a library, a health centre and a number of shops and businesses.
