History of Chesterfield
The market town of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, England, lies on the banks of the River Rother about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Derby and 11 miles (18 km) west of Sheffield. The town has a historic market located on its central market square, which is home to the Chesterfield Christmas Market, one of the largest in the country.
The town’s history dates back to the 7th century, when it was founded as a Saxon settlement. The name Chesterfield is derived from the Old English words ceaster (Roman fort) and feld (open field).
The town was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, and in 1204 it was granted a charter by King John.
During the medieval period, Chesterfield was an important staging post on the Great North Road between London and York. The town was also home to a large number of inns and taverns, which made it a popular stopping point for travellers.
