History of Cheektowaga
If you are looking for a city with small town feel and all the modern amenities, look no further than Cheektowaga, New York. According to the 2010 census, Cheektowaga’s population is 88,226. It is the largest suburb of Buffalo with nearly 30 percent of the population being of Polish descent, giving the city its nickname “The Poland of America.”
The first known inhabitants of the Cheektowaga area were the Iroquois Indians. The name Cheektowaga comes from the Iroquois word Jiikdowagah, meaning “place of the contested bowl,” or “bowl town,” referring to the shape of the land.
The first settlers of Cheektowaga were of Dutch descent. In 1808, the Town of Cheektowaga was established as part of the newly created Niagara County. The Town of Cheektowaga included what is now the City of Cheektowaga, as well as the Towns of Lancaster and Depew.
Cheektowaga began to grow in the mid19th century with the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and the Buffalo and Erie Railroad in 1852. These transportation arteries brought people and products to the area and sparked industrial growth. The Village of Sloan was incorporated in 1869 and became a city in 1930. The Village of Williamsville was also incorporated in 1869. Later, the Village of Depew would be incorporated in 1894.
As the 20th century dawned, Cheektowaga’s population began to boom. In 1908, the Village of Cheektowaga separated from the Town and became a separate entity. In 1922, the Town of Lancaster also became a separate entity. In 1946, after World War II ended, the Kazimierz Pułaski Reservation was established in Cheektowaga for returning war veterans. Thehuge influx of people led to overcrowding in the schools, so in 1950, the first doublesession school day was established.
In 1953, Cheektowaga became a city, and in 1954, the Cheektowaga Central School District was established. The City of Cheektowaga has continued to grow in recent years. In 2007, the Walden Galleria, one of the largest shopping malls in upstate New York, opened in Cheektowaga.
Today, Cheektowaga is a modern city with a small town feel. It is home to businesses of all types, as well as a variety of parks and recreation facilities. Cheektowaga is also home to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which serves the BuffaloNiagara region.
