History of Calexico

Calexico is a city in Imperial County, California. The city is located on the Mexican border, just across from its sister city, Mexicali in Baja California. Calexico is about 120 miles (190 km) east of San Diego and about 180 miles (290 km) southeast of Los Angeles.

The origins of the name “Calexico” are disputed. One theory is that it is a portmanteau of “California” and “Mexico”, while another holds that it is derived from the Latin word for “sea of wax”, calēre (also the root of the English word “calorie”).

The city was founded in 1899 by W. F. Holt and C. A. Barker, who built an irrigation ditch near the site. The first post office in Calexico opened in 1900.

The city was incorporated on April 16, 1908. It was originally part of San Diego County, but was transferred to Imperial County in 1907.

The population of Calexico grew rapidly during the 1920s, reaching 5,000 by 1930. The city’s economy was based on agriculture, and it was known as the “World’s Sweetest Town” because of the large quantity of sugar beets grown in the area.

The Imperial Valley became known for its agriculture, particularly for its production of cotton. Calexico was the largest city in the Valley at the time, and it boasted a large number of businesses, including several hotels, a movie theater, and a bowling alley.

The city continued to grow during World War II, when it was used as a base for the training of American soldiers. After the war, the city’s population began to decline, as people moved away from the area in search of work.

Today, Calexico is a border town with a population of about 37,000. The city still has a large agricultural sector, but has also diversified its economy to include tourism, manufacturing, and other industries.
