History of Westerly
Westerly is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 22,787 at the 2010 census. Westerly is the home of Misquamicut State Beach, one of Rhode Island’s most popular beaches, and is connected toWatch Hill via the Misquamicut Sands Trail.
The area was first settled by John Winthrop, Jr. in 1661 as part of the Connecticut Colony. The town was incorporated by the Rhode Island General Assembly on July 13, 1669 as Westerly. The town grew rapidly along the Pawcatuck River and became known for its stonecutting industry, which was sparked by the demand for tombstones in the 1800s.
