History of Middletown (Pennsylvania)
Middletown is a city located in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The city sits along the Susquehanna River, about 3 miles south of Harrisburg, the state capital. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 28,660.
The area now known as Middletown was settled by ScotsIrish and German immigrants in the 1750s. The town was originally called Montgomeryville, after the Irishman Richard Montgomery, who helped lead the American Revolution. In 1785, the town was renamed Middletown after being The 10th town laid out in Pennsylvania.
Middletown rapidly grew through the early 19th century as a stop along the Pennsylvania Canal and later the Pennsylvania Railroad. With the addition of several manufacturing plants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Middletown became an industrial city.
Middletown’s industries have included: silk mills, cigar factories, textile mills, steel mills, foundries, railroad cars, ice cream freezers, automobiles, vending machines, and refrigerators. Brennemann’s department store was a local landmark from 1896 to 1986.
