Founded in 1864, Butte is a town in southwestern Montana and is the county seat of Silver Bow County. Once known as the ” Richest Hill on Earth,” it is home to more than 17,000 people.
More than one million tons of copper were mined from Butte hills between 1864 and 1955, and mining continues to be a significant part of the economy. The World Museum of Mining is located here, and the city has been designated a National Historic Landmark District.
The city’s architecture is a mix of Victorian and Art Deco, and many of the buildings have been granted National Historic Landmark status. The Moulton Block, the Miner’s Union Hall, and the Copper King Mansion are just a few of the notable structures.

History of Butte
Butte, once known as the “The Richest Hill on Earth”, is a historic city located in southwestern Montana. Founded in 1864 as a mining town, Butte quickly rose to prominence as a major center of copper mining. In the late 19th century, it was the site of several largescale labor strikes, most notably the Anaconda Copper Mine Strike of 1892.
Today, Butte is a National Historic Landmark and a Tourist destination. Visitors can tour the World Museum of Mining, visit the Dumas Brothel Museum, or take a walking tour of the city’s historic uptown district.
Butte’s history begins in the 1860s, when gold was discovered in the nearby town of Virginia City. This led to a boom in mining activity in the area, and prospectors soon began searching for other minerals. In 1864, a man named William Andrews found copper ore in a small ravine near what is now downtown Butte. He claimed his discovery as the “Alexander Mining District”, and began mining the ore himself.
As word of the new mining find spread, more and more prospectors arrived in the area. A small tent city sprang up at the base of the hill where Andrews had found the copper ore, and by 1865 this had grown into a fullfledged town called “Bunton”. In 1866, another prospector named Marcus Daly arrived in Bunton. He bought out Andrews’ claim and began mining the ore, which he shipped out to smelters in Salt Lake City.
Daly was extremely successful, and by 1874 he had amassed a fortune of $5 million. He renamed the town “Butte” after the Irish city of his birth, and began plans to turn it into a major metropolis. He built a hospital, a theatre, and a number of other public buildings. He also installed a cable car system to bring ore down from the mines on the hill.
By the 1880s, Butte was one of the largest cities in the American West, with a population of over 40,000. It was a rough and tumble place, full of taverns, brothels, and gambling halls. This reputation was only enhanced by the city’s violent labour struggles. In 1887, Daly’s miners went on strike for better wages and working conditions. The strike turned violent, and Daly eventually called in the National Guard to put down the uprising.
In 1892, another strike, this time at the Anaconda Copper Mine, again turned violent. This time, the violence resulted in the deaths of over two dozen men. The Anaconda Copper Mine Strike was one of the largest and most violent labour disputes in American history.
Despite its reputation as a dangerous and violent place, Butte was also home to a number of successful businesses and prominent citizens. Daly’s cable car system, for example, was the first of its kind in the United States. And while the city’s mines were plagued by accidents, they were also extremely productive, making Butte one of the richest mining districts in the world.
Today, much of Butte’s early history has been forgotten. The city’sPopulation has declined sharply since the 1950s, when the last of the city’s mines closed. Butte is no longer the bustling metropolis it once was. However, its rich history and unique character remain, and visitors can still get a sense of what life was like in this onetime “The Richest Hill on Earth”.
